What is Tagua?

Tagua, also called vegetable ivory, is the nut of the Tagua Palm tree that grows in the tropical rainforests of Ecuador, Colombia and Peru. Each tree produces bushels of nuts that are gathered and dried, without harm to the rainforest. This natural plant product replaces animal ivory and provides families with a sustainable cash income.
Once dried, the nuts are purchased by artisans who cut and carve them into various shapes. Sometimes they are dyed in the many colors you see in our key chains. Some are left in their natural creamy white color, and the brown seed coat is used as part of the design.

Why Tagua?

The harvesting of the Tagua nut provides and promotes….

  • Sustainable management practices in the rainforests of Ecuador
  • An economic incentive for maintaining the rainforests in their natural state, instead of clearing them for logging and agricultural uses.
  • Is a non-toxic, all-natural, ecologically friendly product for your home.

…And it saves the elephants!
